What Causes Earthquakes Inside Continental Plates?

This is a Mystery of Import Because there is believed to be a 1/3 chance of an earthquake near the fault where the largest earthquake in US took place in 1811 and 1812. This might be as disastrous as the California earthquake of the early 20th century because many more people are living in the New Madrid region than in 1811. But recent research with GPS years found no plate movement of any sort even though changes as small as 0.2 millimeters of movement are seen. At this rate it would take 10,000 years to accumulate enough energy for a large earthquake, researchers conclude in March 13 Science. Evidence indicates that major earthquakes also shook the region around A.D. 1450, 900 and 490 implying a 500 year cycle. This fits in with the conventional view of faults- they build up pressure and and eventually release it with a quake then rebuild up. Instead of recharging as the San Andreas fault is, New Madrid may be deactivating. "Past records of big mid continent earthquakes now hint they go in clusters at one fault for a while and then migrate somewhere else with the New Madrid fault being just the one that's been active most recently. How this occurs and where the energy comes from in mid continental earthquakes still remains a big mystery."

...It's possible that the energy for these events comes not from relative plate motion at the surface but rather from the overall motion of the continent to the west relative to the discontinuity of the Moho deeper down where the rock changes phase. They've found a huge canyon with sonar in the outer surface of the iron core of the Earth, and there are also uneven surfaces of the Moho. The general westward motion of the plates would tend to try to shear and smooth off the Moho to make it easy to move to the west or in other directions. Like the earthquakes of the pacific there wouldn't be the necessity of lava eruption especially if the quake is at great depth. The pressure might build up and release a few times at one fault line, then a big earthquake would break off a chunk of the Moho like a mountain root, smoothing out the discontinuity. The motion of the continent west would then find another point of the pressure and the earthquakes would then build up with the whole pressure of the continent concentrated in just one region for awhile, with the cycles of small quakes to the large when the rock is broken of at the Moho. The concentration of pressure would explain how the New Madrid event was so large even if far from the edges of the continents where most known tectonics take place. This is a prediction of this cause of the earthquakes inside the plate margins, often a set of smaller earthquakes building up to a big quake like in the West with the general release of pressure, otherwise the continent couldn't move with long term drift. The idea that big quakes go indefinitely in cycles may not be true because once the rock is broken off it may much change the geometry of the plates like the San Andreas or the Moho with relief from the earthquakes because of a smoother path for the masses of rock to slide on or past.

... While the pressure with a regular source of plate motion may mostly constant the ways it may be released may be more complex. Both earthquakes and volcanoes have been known since the early 20th century to go in 30 day cycles with 2/3 of the eruptions and earthquakes taking place within 10 days of the first of the month when the moons tides are the highest, and the land tides of about a foot are caused by the tides when the moon sails over. Thus while the main power source and cause of the tectonics is simple, even so the motions of the plates may change considerably in direction and this may also make earthquake prediction more unreliable.

If the Moho is smooth beneath the mid continental earthquake zones and no pressure is building and the rock is sliding well, the chance of quakes may be reduced in general. By knowing the pressure deep down and if a chunk is about to break off because of the general motion of the plate prediction might be more reliable up to the maximum amount we have possible here too, just as earthquakes like in the west are more predictable than in the earlier days when earthquake science was more unknown. The input of power by the moon is constant and the geology is more complex, and the general plate motion is regular and gives way in a general regular cycle, but if no pressure is seen to build up and the rock is moving smoothly, the earthquake would tend to be moved to other realms.



A ROAD SCHOLAR

...We think of ancient roman roads as wide and smooth, like American superhighways, actually they already roads in ancient times like superhighways by the 1st century AD, even so on the roads we know of here potholes are 50,000 times more from semis than VW's or chariots. The roman roads still in use used stones and stone was never stopped by a semi with 1000 horses. Today's roads unlike the ancient roman lakes used to mine for the roads, the lacus asphaltus, need no resurfacing in 2000 years! Rather once in a year or two is how often most roads are re arched costing billions. An interesting solution that's been recently thought of is to just use a thin strong coat of spray on sealer, perhaps made of polymers or vitreous (Latin for glass) so the lava flow of the road would always be higher like lava of more usual worth and flow uphill. Or perhaps in the future a superthin layer of superstrong solid made of particles like proton wires would be sprayed on. By just spraying the solid coat on the road and letting it harden with traction a much more durable coat would be achieved with precision, road repairs would then all be achieved from inside a machine, much cheaper 24/7 and at high speed. Engineers may hope to make the thin layers of stuff that flexes no more than superhighways do now so no more expense to auto owners except the flexing of the auto as it drives past might generate electricity. The surface could be sprayed on in two layers of opposite charge so that when light or the car change the potential, power would be generated. The inventor says more advanced plans might involve and also even improve traction by sending a reflex to the front or rear of the tire when needed or even using some of the downward motion to make it as if the car is always going downhill (more often higher actually, I think optimal about roads!) by storing the flex that's otherwise dissapated with cars of today and flexing it as the wheel rolls over to give the car a boost from it's own energy otherwise used to heat the superhighway. This is like feetwear used to win in many marathons by storing the flex and then bouncing your heel up higher as you go forward except here the road could be the storage medium, saving power for all types of machines. It wouldn't necessarily be expensive to build with advanced technology if the thin layers were just sprayed on at high speed (they would flex at the atomic level in a simple wire loop and be much like roads now, except more efficient and with other advantages).

TWO NEW TYPES OF TRAIN

One is a high speed aero train for moving people and other stuff. Levitation trains cost millions per mile. Instead of building an elaborate infrastructure ("rails") inventors propose that these people trains would use conventional rails that other trains use. However they would be so light they are supported on air nozzles just the lateral size of each rail, running most of the length of each car of this type of el treno. Propellors or even wings with lift like the VSTOL airplanes might add more lift and stability, and no doubt there would be guidance and stability by wheels that clamp on the rails. There may be much higher speeds of a train of this type. A train like French TGV trains have had problems with crashes due to instability, a lighter train above the rails and in the air might be much easier to stabilize. All the traffic would be checked and if a slow train was ahead, this train would slow down faster than a train like the TGV. This type of train, essentially a sort of guided hovercraft except with more stability, may be used as an alternative to going on the superhighwayin the year 2097 AD because of the high speed. It may be more modular in one piece for safety, so like some hovercraft with a much lighter mass than other high speed trains if there were people at the crossing the train could lift up and over using emergency power. Another possibility may be via stopping much faster by using the centrifugal force of oscillation of a section of a wheel with the force aimed away from the crossing to cancel out most of the inertia for the people inside and the general motion of the train so it could stop at high speed.

Have you heard of the New Gravity Powered Machines? A use of gravity power may be to make trains with gravity powered locomotives. These may rock back and forth like the hand powered small machines you'd see in the old days, each downward motion by one person would be lifted by the other hand and then vice versa, so the machine moves ahead by the rocking motion of the power. Gravity power machines operate by a rocking motion, so a use of the machine may be to have two large bins that could be filled with cargo, as they rock back and forth they would generate power. The train may have many of these locomotives, even all the train. This might be of great worth to the ecology because of the power saved, and may make most goods or all goods shipped just half the price. When there will be concrete airplanes!
